Seeking justice, finding love
Ten years ago, Tony Monaco
was the heir to a criminal empire. Now he runs Payback, a mysterious
network dedicated to helping others like himself move from the wrong side
of the law to the right side. In return for Tony's help, each member
of Payback must agree to bring another criminal to justice.
Payback features heroes
who are former bad boys, compelling and dangerous, still struggling to
keep away from the dark side of their natures. And though each man
starts out seeking justice... he ends up finding love.
I.W.:
Writing the Payback
series was far more challenging than I had initially thought. I've always
loved the bad boy, edgy hero, but it's tough to make a guy like that heroic
while still leaving him enough "edge" to be, well, bad. For example, the
first book in the series, THE ANGEL AND THE OUTLAW, opens when the hero
stumbles across the heroine while she's aiming a hunting rifle at the man
who killed her brother. Does the hero worry about the heroine committing
murder? Nah, he's worried she might miss. Don't let the hero's courtly
pose on the book cover fool you (how DO they come up with scenes that bear
no resemblance to the story inside??). This guy's as hard-boiled as they
come. As I said, he was a challenge. So were the others. By the time I
got to the final book of the trilogy, I couldn't resist calling in my old
friends from Eagle Squadron to help out the hero. Actually, I often have
characters from earlier books show up in later ones, likely because they
got more interesting than I'd planned and so wouldn't stay on the shelf
when I was done with them.
